late last year music for dreams released the digital album -debut- by bongo entp. this passion project from veteran studio session player jacob andersen brought us an unexpectedly fresh take on south american music traditions. on this new vinyl release, the project is both revisited and expanded upon. cherry picking some of the grooviest cuts from the album for this ep, we also get remix treatments from well sourced collaborators selvagem & carrot green. both hailing from brazil, these producers certainly know how to work latin percussion on a dancefloor. taking on the dreamy cover version of henri mancini�s classic -lujón- (original included too), carrot green ups the tempo and wrangles the elements of the original into something completely different. adding a house kick and dark acid undertones, he takes you on a wet trip with lots of twists and turns. the production duo of selvagem manage something similar with one of the looser bongo entp. jams. the original -foto feita do aviaõ is a jazzy scat sinaalong tune. in selvagem�s hands, it turns into an epic cosmic disco groover, locked into place by a muscular baseline. the vocal chants of the original are here, but used in a lower key and more sparingly to punctuate the bounce of the rhythm. the vinyl includes two other album highlights - the cafe del mar classic -el rey de pollo- , a santana-style chill-out affair featuring mikkel nordsø of bombay hotel fame and finally the moody -spanish winter- with its robotic reggae-like groove and syrup-thick synthesizers bubbling in a bittersweet fashion. a superb package.

matrixxman has been a dekmantel regular for a couple of years now. the san francisco producer continues to impress with a new triptych for dekmantel records. over the course of three eps (rhythm, acid, polyphony), charles mccloud duff displays his versatile and original take on house and techno. the concept of the triptych is to explore the range within the confines of a particular limitation. this second ep sector ii: acid- shows an exercise in acid. similarly, the tb-303 may conjure certain knee-jerk reactions at a glance, but acid has the potential to cover a broader palette of emotion than one might initially expect. sector ii holds three squirming 303 sequences and the classic rhythmic drum programming of arrival, bad acid and i am matrix. rites on the other hand is more subtle and fluent, swinging with hazy acid flourishes and dynamic syncopation.

optimo music are delighted to present the second full-length from the golden filter, still / alone. after relocating to london and playing shows around europe for a year and a half, self-imposed pariahs penelope trappes and stephen hindman delved into creating a two-sided existential opus by renting out old studio spaces around the uk and using mostly analog 80 s instruments, machines and effects. an album about being in love with pure solitude, when still // alone is separated into two distinct sides, record one, still, is a hypnotic meditation for the nightclub. wavy patterns of sound and light bounce off of penelope�s literary vocal bursts, layered over the ominous deep synths and arpeggiators, held together only by a strict 4/4 beat. the rhythm, ironically forcing the body to move, however internally focused and mindful, still. record two, alone, takes the club offline and into the fringes of raw, odd pop.

trained in the art of deejay toasting by the legendary dennis alcapone, lester bulllock initially called himself alcapone junior, until maverick record producer lee scratch perry renamed him dillinger in the early 1970s, following his success on a west kingston sound system called smith the weapon, based in the ghetto of payne avenue. perry cut dillingers first dozen tracks, and there was early work for other producers such as prince tony, augustus pablo, enos mcleod and phil pratt, then, dillingers debut album, ready natty dreadie, was a local hit for studio one, but the cb200 set for island catapulted him to international prominence. yet, the dillinger material with the roughest edge was always produced by bunny striker lee, as this lp, answer my question, so amply demonstrates. first issued in the netherlands on the scramble label in 1977, it shows dillinger on fearsome form, his relaxed rhyming toasts tackling sound system matters, the rastafari lifestyle, action movie subplots, the highs and lows of romantic relationships, the need to help the less fortunate, and other burning issues of the day with biting wit and verbal dexterity, all delivered over tough aggrovators rhythms�including an unusual cut of the three piece suit rhythm. go deh! reissued on lp and cd, on cd for the first time ever!

triple h rated techno goodness: hard, hitting, hexagonal

label boss spartaque delivers a massive 3 tracker on the first codex vinyl release. in the beginning sets forth a commanding bassline while acidic synths move fluidly with the rhythm and distinct arpeggios come together to take you into the darkness. amber room stomps through the room with an elastic groove, hi hats sessions and deep basslines, while clearing the path for growling synths and melodic overtones layered with a sexy diva vocal sample. the ep closes with a track titled berliner goes the rave collaboration with spartaque s good friend greenjack, which delivers a grinding bassline in combination with the hypnotic male vocals of the haunting kind, eerie notes and a mysterious vibe throughout.

second round for french in any case imprint, still keeping it chopped and dusty, celebrating the sound of the almighty rhodes electric piano through this 5 tracker wax slab. opening this release is the fashionable parisian tell with a cool house cut featuring some lush samples and a driving beat. following is the label co-founder g2s track amako blending a strong backbeat with a groovy bass and chopped rhodes sample closing a side with a neat library style feeling. we ve then got malouane (co-founder too) opening the flip with a trippy tune including melty percussions on top of a jungly bassline. succeeding, manuel nie from germany with a hip hop - house crossover, banging drums cutting through perfect rhodes samples. finally, ibn sabaa is closing the v/a with a mean head-nodding modern hip hop groove that will doubtlessly wreck your neck.

after 10 years of pushing the envelope of bass music, leeds based j.sparrow launches his own record label navy cut. navy cut promises to explore new territory in sound system music by focusing on quality releases by some of the worlds talented producers. nc001 introduces a new project between leo james (ruckspin, author, submotion orchestra) and ed gooden (quark). speak back the a side is very reminiscent of early rhythm and sound featuring shanee pink on vocals. the b side ventures into a more sound system style steppas affair featuring moody guitar by ed gooden. to finish off this debut release egoless one of croatia s finest exports completely flips the a side with a lively remix. future releases by navy cut will feature music by j.sparrow, author, rwild and guests.

as yse saint laur ant, ant plate (one half of ever productive duo rhythm plate) takes some time out from crafting refined deep house music to indulge his more wayward tendencies. amongst the music coming to light in this intriguing diversion from a prolific artist is the fantastic just because, which comes on like early wagon christ material with a modern production sheen. space is defunct meanwhile slaps down some chugging 80s flavoured grooves, 2106 reaches for the boogie and dont make me think channels a laid back balearic mindset. it s a mixed bag of a record, make no mistake. that s also what makes it marvelous.

picking up where they left off three years ago, modern heads, the much-respected collaboration between gianluca meloni and dino sabatini, are back with a dynamic and intriguing four track ep. the duo go straight in here with the club-ready athena. throughout this track, tight percussive elements wind in and around one another, creating an ever-changing rhythm that you can only just hold onto. under this, tense synths pulse away, producing an opaque and insular atmosphere. next up, eumaeus lightens the mood somewhat, providing clarity with a distinct opening drum pattern. this mood doesnt last long though, as indiscernible, haunting vocals begin to echo in the distance, gradually moving closer and further in the mix as sharp pads swoosh either side. side b of the record opens with the deepest and longest track of the ep, eurycleia. simple yet unrelenting drums frame this hypnotic sci-fi episode, through which otherworldly screeches and rumbles reverberate over the twinkling sounds of machines. eurycleias atmosphere continues straight into the final track, laertes theme. this beatless piece takes eurycleias exploratory mood and extrapolates it over five and a half minutes, resulting in what feels like the perfect soundtrack to a glacial expedition in alien territory. as an ep this is a complete and coherent package, a perfect extension to modern heads previous work. the sound palette is familiar, yet refined, developed upon and taken further. the old beggar is undeniably worth the wait for anyone with a taste for the extraterrestrial.

unknown archetype is a collaborative project between roxy tripp, a british conceptual artist & music producer, and oliver kucera a czech born producer & live performer, residing in the netherlands. with an extensive background of solo projects in the underground scene, the duo began their collaboration together as unknown archetype in 2015. the tripp ep is an abrasive, visceral ep of electronic body music underpinned by themes of jungian psychology, symbolism and mythology. the industrial tech funk of lead track �voyeurism� kicks things off - skittering breakbeats, squalling filters and blistering snares pile-driving the listener into ecstatic submission, while �tripp� see the duo employing sizzling bursts of white noise and caustic percussion over a jagged rhythm box figure. matters are pared right back for the rigid austerity of closer �the serpent� - the dubbed out lead stab quivers over a strobing 909 drum groove and scything cymbals. effortlessly balancing deep late night sounds with a unique character and intricate headphone centric programming, the tripp ep is a fitting and welcome addition to r&s�s storied catalogue.

six years ago, claremont 56 boss paul �mudd� murphy tried to track down via his dj network, former freeez band-members john rocca and andy stennett to license pink rhythm�s �melodies of love�, for one of the originals compilations. they didn�t show up on the radar.
earlier this year, however, out of the blue, stennett got in touch with murphy. for much of the last two decades, he�d been living on a remote island off orkney, but was now pursuing music again.

leave all the preconceptions behind and engage with the sound for a moment. two spaced out sides which drag into a unreal act of travelling, through the dense basslines and visionary synths. going through both sides will take you to a well aranged after party mode, still going forward in a very solid and well expressed rhythm. this release easily flows into the entourage and becomes something memorable.

advanced deep driving techno from amsterdam! jp enfant s let recordings continues to slowly but surely build a fine reputation, and in fact his last ep on the label featured a track, sirens , which got used to great effect by daniel avery on his acclaimed dj kicks mix. now a fourth interesting ep on let recordings comes from shoal, who makes his first out on vinyl after a digital release on planet rhythm in october. utrecht based shoal aims to balance his techno sounds somewhere between rhythmic hypnosis and detailed soundscaping. he urges listeners to twitch out of their comfort zone and to really engage with his music. that is made all the more easy given that it is such inventive stuff. a powerful ep from this emerging new artist.

emptyset is the innovative electronic duo of james ginzburg and paul purgas. the duo composes within a complex set of self-imposed parameters or rule sets and the results of their expeditions on borders are at once minimal and visceral. focusing on shifting timbral changes over melody, emptyset�s work is an exploration of the relationship between rhythm, texture and space.

originally founded by kisk back in 2009 apparel music set out to offer something truly singular in focusing their musical output predominately on jazz whilst venturing into its integration across the landscape of electronic music at the time.with a zealous release schedule, they racked up a healthy collection of eps between 2010-2015 from artists such as delano smith, scsi-9, sarp yilmaz and the label owner himself amongst many others. now after a year-long hiatus, the label makes a return with a slick 4-track va that fans both old and new will relish. strictly limited to a pressing of 200 on 180 grams of wax, their re-launch brings with it a jazz-suffused 4-track record featuring voyeur, ivano tetelepta & eugeÌne latumeten, kisk and kerem akdag. voyeurs swinging for theo kicks things off with organic, brushed drums and a walking bass line set off to a tight, swaying rhythm. glassy rhodes keys bleed into the mix ahead of piano stabs and 909 hats that propel progress when combined with a thickened low-end. ivano tetelepta & eugeine latumeten follow up with je suis reconnaissant a bass-heavy groove that lays soulful vocal samples over filtered piano chords and loose-limbed hat patterns. kisks just u then drives a crackly drum loop through distant, flexing synth tones. arresting vocal samples then take the foreground in a rich, smokey mix before istanbuls kerem akdags closes up the package. akin to the styles of producers such as henry wu and max graef, akdags friend melds playful drum patterns with thick chord stabs and smooth vocal lines that wrap up a stellar return for apparel music.
